10 Tata announced the Rs.1-lakh Nano car Tata Motors' Chairman Ratan Tata unveiled the Rs 1-lakh car at the 9th auto Expo in New Delhi. The 'Peoples' car' has been named Nano. It would be launched in the Market during the second half of the year. "The car is powered by a 624 cc, 30 bhp engine. The car will deliver about 20 kmpl mileage," Ratan Tata, said at the launch function.
11 Edmund Hillary passed away. He was the unassuming beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century’s greatest adventurers, died Friday. He was 88. The gangling New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called Ed and considering himself an ‘ordinary person with ordinary qualities’.
24 Mukesh wins Mumbai IPL team for $112 million. He won the bid to sponsor the Mumbai team of the Indian Professional League (IPL) tournament promoted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Twas he bid for the Mumbai team for $111.9 million.
26 Sharapova wins the Australian Open women’s title. Russia's tennis Tsarina beat Ivanovic to make amends for last year's final defeat by Serena Williams and win her third grand slam title.
27 Novak Djokovic wins Australian Open men’s title. Third seed Novak Djokovic overcame a leg injury to win his first Grand Slam title with a victory over unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Australian Open final on Sunday.

2 French President Nicolas Sarkozy marries the model Carla Bruni in a small ceremony. Sarkozy, 53, and Bruni, 40, have had a whirlwind courtship, marrying less than three months after they reportedly first met, and less than four months after Sarkozy divorced his second wife, Cecilia.
9 Noted social activist and Magsaysay award winner Murlidhar Devidas Amte alias Baba Amte died at his Anandvan ashram in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra on Sunday. He was 94. One of the country's most respected social leaders, Amte devoted his life to the care and rehabilitation of leprosy patients. He is survived by two sons.
24 Cuba President Fidel Castro quits his office after 49 years of power. Seventy-nine-year-old Cuban President Fidel Castro, who resigned as Cuba President temporarily handed over power to his younger brother after undergoing surgery. He challenged the US government for four decades.
29 Central Budget was announced by Finance minister Mr.Chidambaram today, joined the leap year club presenting the country's ninth budget on that extra day which falls once in four years. It will only be the ninth time since the country's independence that the budget was tabled on February (Feb.29) in a leap year.

4 India wins Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia. India ended their tour of Australia on a high note when they beat the hosts by nine runs on Tuesday to win their best-of-three finals series.The 2007-08 edition of the Commonwealth Bank Series was a One Day International cricket tournament held in Australia. The Commonwealth Bank Series is an annual event involving the national teams of Australia, India and Sri Lanka. India won the event with a 2-0 sweep of the hosts in the final series
17 With a deal finally struck, JPMorgan Chase & Co will embark on the tough task of absorbing Bear Stearns Cos, once among its biggest rivals on Wall Street. As the assimilation proceeds, the financial industry wants to know exactly how badly Bear Stearns bet on mortgage-backed investments.
19 Raghuvaran (49) the noted character actor of Tamil cinema passed away early this morning at a private hospital in Chetpet, Chennai, due to a cardiac arrest. The actor was married to actress Rohini, but the marriage failed and they went through a messy divorce. The couple has an 8-year-old son Nanda.
25 Yousuf Raza Gillani was on Tuesday sworn in as Pakistan's new Prime Minister by President Pervez Musharraf at a ceremony boycotted by top leaders of the ruling coalition. He becomes the 26th Prime Minister of Pakistan.

7 Ganesh Natarajan nominated as Nasscom Chairman. He has been associated with Nasscom for a number of years and has helped in setting up a several initiatives.
25 SEBI okays real estate mutual fund scheme. Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has decided to allow mutual funds (MF) to launch real estate mutual fund (REMF) schemes. Announcing this, the market watchdog said in an official statement that it has amended the SEBI (Mutual Funds) Regulations 1996 to permit the launch of REMFs.

7 Dmitry Medvedev was inaugurated as Russia's President on Wednesday, pledging to bolster the country's economic development and civil rights, in what may signal a departure from his predecessor's heavy-handed tactics. Medvedev took the oath of office in the Kremlin's golden-hued Andreyevsky Hall, bringing to an end Vladimir Putin's eight years as President.
12 Deadly earthquake in China ,which toppled the buildings, schools and chemical plants in central China, killing about 10,000 people and trapping untold numbers in mounds of concrete, steel and earth in the country's worst quake in three decades. The 7.9-magnitude quake devastated a region of small cities and towns set amid steep hills north of Sichuan's provincial capital of Chengdu.
12 After being named among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine, head of India's Tata Group Ratan Tata has been included in the list of 73 biggest brains in business for his Rs 100,000 Nano car.
13 Jaipur bomb blasts killed 68
20 Ma Ying-jeou elected as new president of China. Ma Ying-jeou, a smooth Harvard law graduate who advocates better relations with China, was elected president of Taiwan by an overwhelming margin, opening the prospect of lowered tensions in the volatile Taiwan Strait.
20 Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani was conferred the Chitralekha Person of the Year 2007 award, instituted by the leading Gujarati weekly Chitralekha.Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who was bestowed the honour two years ago,conferredr the award to Mukesh Ambani.

1 Rajasthan Royals win the inaugural IPL title, defeating Chennai Super Kings by three wickets in a last-ball finish in the final at the D.Y. Patil Sports Academy.
8 Rafael Nadal wins the French Open men’s singles title produced a flawless exhibition of claycourt tennis to demolish world No 1 Roger Federer and won his fourth straight French Open title. The Spaniard was at his relentless best as he tore Federer apart in one hour 48 minutes to deny the Swiss a career grand slam and equal Bjorn Borg's feat of four consecutive titles at Roland Garros.
14 Space shuttle Discovery and its crew of seven returned to Earth on Saturday and capped a successful expansion job at the international space station, now more spacious and robust thanks to a new billion-dollar Japanese science lab.
27 Microsoft founder Bill Gates stepped down from his full-time role at Microsoft to spend more time on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Microsoft announced the two year transition plan for Gates shortly after the close of U.S. financial markets. Ray Ozzie will assume Bill Gates' job title of Chief Software Architect after recently completing his team's integration of Groove Networks into Office 2007.
29 Five persons, including three women, were killed and 35 others injured in a powerful bomb blast at a weekly market in lower Assam's Baksa district.The bomb went off around 1:10 pm in busy Kumarikata weekly market in Tamulpur, killing five persons on the spot.

5 Venus Williams beat sister Serena for her fifth Wimbledon title and seventh Grand Slam championship.This was Venus` first victory over her younger sibling in a Grand Slam final since the 2001 US Open, and it evened their career record at 8-8.
6 Nadal wins the 2008 men's singles title defeating Roger Federer`s five-year reign as king of Wimbledon with a victory in one of the most dramatic finals seen at the All England Club.
7A powerful explosion killed at least 44 people and wounded scores of others in an apparent suicide attack at the Indian Embassy in Kabul.The victims were mostly civilians including women and children, another official added.
9 The draft India-specific nuclear safeguards accord with the International Atomic Energy Agency was on Wednesday circulated to the nuclear watchdog's Board of Governors for approval following a 'request' from the Indian government.
10India-born author Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children has won the 'Best of the Booker' Prize. The winner was announced on Thursday as part of the London Literature Festival at the Southbank Centre in London after a global online poll.
25 A string of nine synchronised bomb blasts shook the IT hub of Banglore during the busy lunch hour, leaving two killed and injuring 12 others - a chilling reminder of the over two-year-old terror attack at the Indian Institute of Sciences here. The crude bombs, concealed near refugee camps and roadside stuffed with nuts and bolts, exploded between 1:30 pm and 1:45 pm at Adugodi, Madivala, Nayandahalli, Mysore Road, Richmond Circle, Pantharapalya and Vittal Mallya Road.
26 A series of 16 synchronised bombings ripped through Gujarat`s main city of Ahmedabad after terror rocked India`s IT hub Bangalore, leaving at least 29 people dead and 88 injured, with the government sounding a nation-wide alert. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said after a meeting of the top police brass that there were 16 blasts, killing 29 people and injuring 88.


August

1 Veteran Marxist leader Harkrishan Singh Surjeet passed away on Friday afternoon. He was 92. He was the General Secretary of the CPI (M) from 1992 to 2005 and was a member of the party's Politbureau from 1964 to 2008. After retiring from his post as General Secretary, Surjeet continued to play an active role in politics.
1 When IAEA Director General Mohammed El Baradei asked members of the agency’s Board of Governors whether any of them had any opposition to the proposed Indian safeguards agreement, none of the 35 members raised his hand. The agreement was passed unanimously after that.
3 At least 145 people were killed and 40 injured in a stampede at the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh when throngs of devotees panicked after a rumour that boulders were rolling down the popular hill shrine. Most of those killed were women and children. A majority of the victims were from neighbouring Punjab.
8Beijing held its formal opening ceremony today for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The ceremony, held in the National Stadium known as the Bird's Nest, was attended by thousands, and watched by millions more on television.
11 India`s new sporting icon, shooter Abhinav Bindra sent the nation into delirious celebrations by bagging the country`s first-ever individual gold medal at the Olympics. Keeping his composure in a crunch situation, Bindra came up with a near perfect 10.8 in his final shot to ensure a top podium finish in the 10-metre air rifle event at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall.
13 Industrialist Ratan Tata has now become Dr Ratan Tata. The Chairman of the Tata Group was conferred with Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by IIT-Bombay
14 India's wholesale price index rose 12.44 per cent in the 12 months to Aug. 2, above the previous week's annual rise of 12.01 per cent, according to the government data .The rate was above a median forecast of 12.21 per cent in a Reuters poll of analysts.
18 Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf,resigned.Musharraf appeared live on national television just after an address that lasted for over an hour. Towards the finish, as the former army commander put an end to almost nine years in power, his voice trembled and he appeared to have tears in his eyes.

6Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari was elected the country's 13th president with a big majority, defeating his two rivals from two Pakistan Muslim League (PML) factions and emerging as the first civilian head of the state. Zardari, 50, is the widower of assassinated PPP chief and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and belongs to a business family of Sindh.
7 American Serena Williams won her ninth Grand Slam title by beating tenacious Serbian Jelena Jankovic in a high-quality US Open women's final. The 26-year-old broke Jankovic three times to take the opening set before saving four set points in the second to seal victory in two hours four minutes and regain the world number one ranking. Williams, who swept away Russian Dinara Safina in the semi-finals, fended off spectacular retrieving by Jankovic with her power game to clinch a third US Open crown but her first here since 2002.
7 Britney Spears won big at Sunday's 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, taking home three awards, including Video of the Year.She kicked off the show with Superbad's Jonah Hill in a pre-taped skit, where he tried to teach her some relaxation techniques.
8 Roger Federer won his fifth US Open in a row by beating Briton Andy Murray in the men`s final and said he did not plan on stopping with his career haul of 13 Grand Slam titles.
13 Four explosions rocked various places in Delhi injuring at least 40 people. The blasts at Ghaffar market in Karol Bagh, at Connaught Place and Greater Kailash took place in a quick succession. The first blast took place at Ghaffar market in which at least 20 people were injured. Two explosions took place in Connaught Place in which at least 10 people were injured. Another explosion rocked M-Block market in Greater Kailash-I.
15 A failed plan to rescue Lehman Brothers was followed by more seismic shocks from Wall Street, including a government-brokered takeover of Merrill Lynch by the Bank of America for $50 billion. A forced restructuring of the world's largest insurance company, American International Group Inc., also weighed heavily on global markets as the effects of the 14-month-old credit crisis intensified.
20 A suicide bomber detonated a dump truck packed with a ton of explosives outside the Marriott in Pakistan`s capital setting off a fiery blast that shattered the luxury hotel, killed at least 42 people and wounded hundreds.
29 The explosion that claimed four lives in this Maharashtra town night was caused by a bomb placed on a motorcycle.Earlier reported to be a gas cylinder explosion, the blast at Bhikku Chowk in the heart of the town left over 50 people injured.


October

1 The India-US civil nuclear deal is finally done with the US Senate giving a resounding 86-13 approval to the historic accord visualised by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and US President George W. Bush over three years ago. The Senate approval to the agreement allowing resumption of nuclear commerce with India, four days after an equally emphatic 298-117 endorsement from the House of Representatives, clears the decks for Bush to sign it into law.

Adiga is the third first-time novelist to win the Booker Prize, which is awarded every year for the best novel in the British Commonwealth and the Republic of Ireland.
17 India's Sachin Tendulkar described his career as a "fantastic journey" after eclipsing retired West Indian Brian Lara's world record for most Test runs crossing 12000-run mark - breaking Lara’s record.
22 In its fourteenth flight conducted from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota this morning (October 22, 2008), the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO’s) Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, PSLV-C11, successfully launched the 1380 kg Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft into a transfer orbit with a perigee (nearest point to Earth) of 255 km and an apogee (farthest point to Earth) of 22,860 km, inclined at an angle of 17.9 deg to the equator.

5 Legendary Filmmaker BR Chopra died following prolonged illness. He was 95 years old. A winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Chopra made hits such as Naya Daur, Gumrah, Humraaz, Dhundh, Insaaf ka Tarazoo and Nikah. He is survived by his filmmaker son Ravi Chopra and two daughters Shashi and Neena.
10Former Indian cricket captain Saurav Ganguly retired from the International Cricket at the end of the series against Australia.Ganguly made his debut in 1996 and has played 109 Test matches. His batting average is 41.74.
11INS successfully repulsed the pirate attack and fired at their `mother ship` in the dangerous waters of the Gulf of Aden near Somalia.

15 India test fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, one of the most successful products of India-Russia military joint venture, from a vertical platform in the Bay of Bengal. The BrahMos missile has been successfully launched from a naval warship in the Bay of Bengal. This is for the first time that BrahMos has been test fired from a universal vertical launcher fitted in a new ship. All earlier launches of BrahMos missiles had been carried out from inclined launchers.
